New Tech Tuesdays: Zigbee Drives Smarter IoT and Sustainable Grids Mouser Technical Content Staff

New Tech Tuesdays

Join Mouser's Technical Content team for a weekly look at all things interesting, new, and noteworthy for design engineers.

As the world transitions to more sustainable energy solutions, more reliable communication between devices is necessary. Zigbee® is redefining how devices communicate within Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled energy systems and smart grids. Its low-power, reliable mesh networking lays a foundation for smarter and more connected energy infrastructures. In this week's New Tech Tuesdays, we look at how the Zigbee protocol is enhancing smart energy systems and shaping tomorrow’s energy management.

How Zigbee Impacts Energy Management

Zigbee is a low-power wireless communication protocol designed for efficient and reliable connections. Zigbee 3.0 integrates devices like smart meters and home energy monitors under a unified standard. This interoperability allows for communication between energy systems and IoT devices, simplifying integration and improving energy efficiency.[1]

IoT energy systems are tasked with managing many devices simultaneously, and in the face of this challenge, Zigbee enables real-time monitoring in smart meters, which helps utilities balance supply and demand while helping consumers optimize usage.[2] In a smart grid, Zigbee’s mesh networking ensures uninterrupted communication, even in demanding conditions, making it useful for reliable energy delivery.

Smart Grids and Renewable Energy Integration

Zigbee has a greater role in smart grids beyond connectivity. In this setting, it’s the foundation for scalable, sustainable solutions. By enabling distributed systems to communicate effectively, Zigbee supports renewable energy sources like solar and wind to ensure efficient energy distribution.

In more urban environments, Zigbee can power smart street lighting systems, which reduce energy waste through methods like adapting to brightness levels based on real-time conditions. Zigbee even reaches into the electric vehicle (EV) sector, managing charging networks and preventing grid overloads during peak hours (Figure 1).

While these applications improve efficiency, they also reduce costs and environmental impact, which is driving Zigbee’s role as a key player in sustainable urban development.[3]

Future Implications for IoT and Energy Systems

As IoT adoption continues to grow, Zigbee’s capabilities become even more critical in creating the seamless device communication required. Integration with Matter—a universal IoT standard—will enhance Zigbee’s interoperability across diverse devices and platforms like smart homes, energy meters, and Industrial IoT (IIoT) settings.

Future advancements may include AI-driven energy management systems using Zigbee to predict consumption patterns or blockchain-secured transactions for peer-to-peer energy trading. This could change energy systems by making them smarter, more efficient, and more secure.

The Newest Products for Your Newest Designs®

This week’s New Tech Tuesdays features the Panasonic Industrial Devices PAN9019 and PAN9019A Wi-Fi® 6 and Bluetooth® 5.4 modules based on an NXP IW611 (PAN9019) or IW612 (PAN9019A) chip. The PAN9019A variant includes an 802.15.4 radio, enabling the use of Zigbee and other low-rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPANs). Offering exceptional connectivity for high data rates, the energy-efficient transceiver modules are ideal for use in IIoT, gateway, and smart home applications.

Tuesday’s Takeaway

Zigbee is not just a communication protocol; it’s laying the groundwork for the scalable and sustainable energy systems that are coming. As Zigbee is integrated into IoT ecosystems and adapts with Matter, it will drive innovation in smart grids, renewables, and device interoperability so we can all experience a smarter and more connected future.
